    Dear fellow UP Nurses,

I am conveying this message to UPNAAI through Christina Presbitero. It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of an icon not only among UP Nurses but also other nursing colleagues. Our dearly beloved founder of UPNAA- USA, inc. MRS. CAROLINA DE GUZMAN,  passed away yesterday (March 5, 2019) with her family at her side. It is a loss all of us who know her well feel deeply at this moment. Mrs. de Guzman ( Lina) was an instructor in the old UP-PGH School of Nursing where she was greatly respected and loved by us her former students.

She continued her active involvement in professional activities here in the US based in her home in the San Francisco East Bay.During the early formative years of UPNAAI, we saw its birth and encouraged a united organization of UP Nurses.  That dream has now been realized in the vibrant UPNAAI of today.

She was a JV SOTEJO Medallion of honor awardee as well as a recipient of many recognitions from PNAA and other nursing organizations for her leadership and literary contributions. It has been my honor and distinct privilege to be with her through most of her professional activities.

She will be missed by many of us and those whose lives she has touched. Please pray for the eternal response of her soul and offer a moment of silence to ponder what she means to each of us personally. It will be a tribute to her and her legacy.

    Sincerely and in UP spirit,

    Daisy M. Rodriguez
    President, UPNAA-USA, Inc.
